Introduction:

The signification of the word “dialogue” is from the Greek “dia” and “logos” which mean through and word/meaning. Therefore the dialogue process is a flood of meaning telling by the participants. On the other hand, the word “discussion” has the same root as the words... concussion and percussion. A metaphor of a discussion could be a ping-pong or tennis game using “words that bounce back and forth”. Dialogue is a vast word used for a “very specific means of communication that we rarely employ effectively today”.

Dialogue is a “mindful communications process that helps individuals to clarify their personal thinking and values within the context of a community of practice”. It helps people or teamwork to share knowledge, to think coherently, and maybe to act in ways that serve the common good. A discussion, compared... with a dialogue, don’t attend to have any particular point of view winning. “Rather dialogue results in shared understanding without judgment. It is about building relationships, learning together and exploring personal and community values”.

What is dialogue?

While the word “dialogue” is often used today as a substitute for polite discussion or conversation, it is used here to signify a specific discipline with a particular meaning and intent. A dialogue is a group communication process in which participants practice certain techniques to enhance their individual and collective learning. In dialogue there is a shared commitment to inquiry without necessarily reaching a decision or taking a specific action. In fact, the expectation or even a hope that a decision will be achieved by consensus or otherwise is enough to derail the dialogue process, especially among beginners.

This question of intent is important and although you can’t force a dialogue to happen, you can provide an environment in which people who truly desire to participate in a dialogue can be supported and encouraged. It may be useful to think about what a dialogue is not. As stated above it is not a decision-making process, although it can result in relationships among group members that make decision-making much easier. It is not a tool for planning action, yet it can produce the kind of mutual respect and understanding that improves the likelihood of successful group action. It is not led by any single individual, however a facilitator is needed to help get it started and guide the process.

Dialogue, Debate and Discuss

There are three main types of conversation which most workers are concerned with.
These are: Dialogue, debate and discuss.

Differences between Debate, Discussion and Dialog may seem impalpable but they have deep importance in pressure of contrast and cooperation.

Briefly, it is all about making aware decisions which effect things positively.

Dialogue:

- Dialogue, speech of 2 or more people who have different opinions. So, dialogue expresses to be argued 2 different opinions rather than being 2 or more people in a speech.
- Because of being a speech of dissidence, there will be at least 2 people or 2 side who talks in different issues.

These elements are necessary in order to mention about a dialog
- Possession of receiver and transmitter
- A message wanted to be transmitted

People in communication can establish a dialogue via visual or audial signs. The message wanted to be transmitted is forwarded via specific codes. ( language, jargon, etc. )

Usually the environment is friendly and likely to transform conflict into cooperation.

- A human being is by dialog. In this connection dialog is a national treasure which people have.
- It is a progress which reaches from “part” to “all”.
- Dialog is type of communication way which provides understanding of people with different perspectives.
- Dialog absolutely focuses on listening and understanding. In a dialog, goals are not defend opinion or win. The goal is only understand each other and solve problems by negotiation.
- By the means of dialog; people who sympathize each other, even have different ideas.
- Feelings, experiences and appropriate personal information appear as content of dialog.
- people are equal level during dialog.
- people don’t want to win during the dialoge. Aim is only learning and creating.

Debate:

Debate is known as the most common unconscious default style. It may not be useful for evertime.

- Main things are ideas and facts to support ideas.
- People want to win and beat the other side.it is the main goal of debate. There are two sides as opponents.
- Attacking ideas and arguments of each other, defending own ideas and arguments are used to win.
- Listening is important to figure out weakness of rival, in their ideas or confidence.
- The atmosphere can be so dynamic.

Dialog and debate are confronting. Debate is a verbal fight in order to beat people in arguments. They focus on listening opponents to catch weakness or falses rather than understanding each other. Ego is so important things in here. A debate rarely ends as anybody persuading by rival to their sides. Feelings can be hurt. If it is a formal and intentional debate, loss will be only disappointment. Nevertheless, in working area, feelings are smarter and more tolerated.

Discussion:

Another way of communication “discussion”. During the discussion people want to sure about their idea and they want to win. At this stage people support their idea and give eventually, others agree with them. But it can’t be so easy. Of course everyone wants to win. Thus people need decision-maker like referee decision.

During the discussion;
- The goal is exchange their ideas and understand with each other. But sometimes discussion will turn into an argument.
- Discussion usually provide creating new ideas. Because there are different people, different perspectives. It is normal.
- Talking is about convince and have participants approve our ideas.
- We are listening the other’s ideas to be approve own ideas.
- We are talking about mostly ideas, facts and opinions during discussion.
- Feeling atmosphere is variable. It can be dynamic ,friendly etc..
- Usually people don’t want to change their ideas and beliefs.

- We must accept that natural to have a conflict of ideas.

Dialogue and Debate:

- In dialog, everybody has a part of answer and they combine in dialogue. In debate, one side believes that they have the right answer.
- In dialog, people work together in order to create a common understanding. In debate, sides try to prove their ideas true, others' wrong.
- In dialog, main purpose is finding the least common denominator. In debate, sides try to win.
- In dialog, sides listen each other to understand, come to an agreement, to find meaning. In debate, sides listen each other to explore rival's weakness, flaws and make counter-arguments.
- In dialog, sides explain their ideas in order to come an agreement. In debate, they defend their own hypothesis, ideas.
- In dialog, there is no rivals. Participants try to find solutions. In debate, there are two sides and generally ends with achieve of one side.
- In dialog, sides believe that others' ideas improve theirs. In debate, every side defend their own idea.
- In dialog, sides search others' ideas and hypothesis in order to strength and value. In debate, searching is only for finding weakness and flaws.
- In dialog, even if the discussion ends, it is kept to continue later. In debate, discussion ends with a loser and a winner. This discourages or encourages sides.
- In dialog, sides discover new options. They don't seek closure. In debate, sides seek vote, conclusion to reinforce their position.

DiaDialogue and team work:

During a teamwork intern communication is essential to reach goals. So in this part we will try to describe diffrent's aspects of the dialogue in a team work. We can call this type of dialogue CPS for « cooperative problem system ». First we will analyze characteristics of a dialogue type, then we will study differents stages of a dialogue team.

A dialogue is process of verbal communication between members. Agents give their point of view, who are a representation of their personnal or collective beliefs, it may express individual or group goals. The dialogue type is composed an initial situation, a primary goal, and a set of rules, these compose the "normative model", according to Barbara Dunin-Keplicz and Rineke Verbrugge, it means that all dialogues follow the same stages and they are composed by similar elements. Few normative model represent most of the dialogues. They are: Persuation (in case of conflict), Negociation (in case of interest conflict), Inquiry (Members are ignorant about solutions), Déliberation (Similar to Inquiry, with an open problem), Information seeking (One team member is ignorent and necessites the skills from others members). These categorizes are useful, because it allow tu choose the appropriate normal model as a tool to solve the problem.

Diffrent stages for an efficient dialogue in the team work are: A good aknowledgment of the plan to achieve the goals. According to Barbara Dunin-Keplicz and Rineke Verbrugge the acknowledgment allow to insist on the most problematic aspect, and use appropriate tools. The team must be created following stages described in the precedent wiki. memebrs must know objectives and the plan. Members must be choosen following their skills and the initiator must persuade members to accept their roles. In this stage personnal beliefs must be respected. The respect of the hierarchy is very important for the cohesion of the dialogue, this aspect can be problematic because during adialogue people have to forget their ego, the role of the chief is to help people to accept differents way of thinking.

In conclusion we can say that the dialogue is one the most important component of the team work because it the best way to understand and solve problems, and it's the most useful way of expression.

DiaDialogue in working life:

Having a dialogue with other we have the opportunity to hear their concerns, their character, their way of thinking, their needs, learn from their experience and develop our understanding
As we discussed in the previous wiki, teamwork is a very valued today and to get good teamwork is very important to have a good dialogue between the people who compose it and in general in the organization.

In any organization there is the formal and informal communication, we can say that communication or dialogue is hierarchical formal, more bureaucratic and vertical and horizontal dialogue is informal and we all practiced in day to day between them. Both are important, because you have to get a good dialogue has both horizontal and vertical.

Regarding formal communication is important to break those barriers that exist in many organizations as long as far as possible and take a step forward. People who are in the top of the pyramid, should be to dialogue with other employees, who make the work more operating and check their expectations at work, problems, progress, how they feel in their jobs with their peers and the general organization etc. Sometimes these people are the most can help you get another different viewpoint and give new ideas on how to improve the internal situation in the organization. Can be used with a feedback.

In addition to new information, it is important for motivation of these, a person who feels valued and taken into account by their superiors, will always feel more motivated and involved with the organization, it will affect many benefits for workers and organization

Learning to communicate is the key to a good dialogue between people. Often, many problems are caused by the lack of good understanding and lack of good communication, is important within the company there are proper channels for staff of the company to communicate and so they are up to date with everything happens in the company, through e-mail, bulletin boards, meetings, etc, the message must be clear to all staff understand.

If we send this information to employees, this will be always up to date with the successes or the problems of the company, sharing the good and bad times, it is important to keep employees informed of what are the objectives and goals business and what is the most appropriate to achieve, maintain a good dialogue. If there is a good vertical and horizontal communication, they strive to achieve the common goal and will improve the work environment. Without good communication , employees may feel that they aren´t valued and lose motivation to achieve those goals

In conclusion, if there is good communication within the company, all fight and work to achieve the overall objective. Communicate different ideas, make staff feel that they are not isolated, as part of a team to achieve success among all members of the same and through joint efforts and in the same direction.

Conclusion:

In the modern society there are different styles of communicating in a team. If you consider the fact, that simplified the goal of a team in business live is to make money, the ideas you bring in to the team-work are worth money, which means that in this competitive situation often not the best idea wins, but the one which is presented in the best way by its creator. If you want to make your team work more effective you have to be aware of this and know the differences between a debate, a discussion and a dialogue.

Like explained in the main part, a debate is a very aggressive way of bringing in an idea, it is used to convince the team member and the boss that your idea is the one which will generate the most money. Therefore any other ideas which could improve the outcome will be displaced and the creator of the through a debate enforced idea will take a leading position in the project. This is only defensible if you have clearly more experience or expertise related to the goal than the other team members. This way you can even shorten the time you need for the project and therefore make it more effective.

A discussion has affinity to a debate, but it´s purpose is to convince the others from your point of view by using reasonable argumentation, here everybody brings in his ideas and arguments, as a result there is much more room for development. Normally a discussion ends when the team members are convinced by a certain idea and agreed to your opinion. It should be democratic and can be used as a tool to filter out developments which have a negative impact on the outcome if used right. That is why discussions are an important part of effective team work.

Dialogue can´t be defined that easily, it has much to do with the over-all attitude of the team and its members. Dialogue is communication between people who know a topic very well and want to share their knowledge with others in order to combine the knowledge of every person in the group. Accordingly the exchange of information will lead to a better understanding of the topic itself. Which again is the basis to develop this knowledge even further and eventually use it to get the best outcome possible. It excludes competitive thinking and its aim is not necessarily to come to a decision and also not to make money but to communicate effective, consider all knowledge available and being motivated just by the question “What can we achieve if we work together?”. In order to enable a dialogue, the most important thing is to be very open minded, to think everything the others have to say through, try to understand why they came to this conclusion and use this knowledge to enrich your own understanding of the topic.

Dialogue is the way of communication which should be practiced in every team, though in many cases in business live, when it comes to time-spans and money – this issue is overlooked. Especially as a team leader, but also as a member you could define the word dialogue in the beginning of every team-work in order to remind the people you work with of how you want to work and of the benefits of working this way.
